Have you ever thought about taking up a new hobby but didn’t know where to start?

Stitched By You is here to help get you on the road to creating beautiful pieces.  A dress for you, a cushion or crochet throw for the home or perhaps a fantastic piece of jewellery.  Anything is possible once you know how. Select from one of our courses below to find out more.

A Small Sample Curtain

Buying curtains and having them made for you can be very expensive. If you can use a sewing machine and hand hem you will be able to make curtains.

Learn to make curtains

Tutor: Wendy Turner

We will show you how to make curtains simply at home by the bagging out method. You will make a sample ½ metre curtain with a simple heading.

The topics we aim to cover are:

  • How to measure a window accurately
  • How to calculate the amount of fabric you will need
  • Learn about pattern repeat and how to match pattern fabric
  • Discuss different styles of curtains and manufactured tape headings
  • Understand how to apply tape headings
  • Gain information on different types and weights of fabrics for curtains
  • Learn how to mitre corners of curtain hems
  • Create your own single lined curtain or sample curtain with a pencil pleat heading

Materials needed:

  • 1m x 114cm calico or main cotton fabric
  • 1m fine calico or lining fabric
  • 120cm standard rufflette tape
  • Thread to match
  • Curtain weights x 2

Please don’t spend a lot of money on fabric as this is only a sample and please bring a soft furnishing fabric, not dressmaking fabric. Fabrics and materials can be purchased in our shop.

We have sewing machines for you to use but if you would like to bring your own please advise us at the time of booking.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are included in your lesson.
